Nutrition Services: Check out the WaveCrestCafe!

Hello Roosevelt Families!

The school year is off to a great start and we’re looking forward to what lies ahead. We want to touch base with you on a subject that can go overlooked at the beginning of a school year: nutrition and healthy eating for our students.

Ensuring that our children are well-fed and ready to learn is a top priority for us as a district. As we sometimes tell students, food is fuel--like gas is to a car.  Without the right fuel, learning and even playing can be more difficult. It’s why our district’s Nutrition Services department works so hard to be a leader and provide our students with fresh, healthy, delicious meals in our WaveCrest Cafes at each school.

Nutrition Services is an area that is often overlooked at schools. So when a district is doing something exceptional, it’s worth pointing that out, and our team is indeed doing exceptional things. In fact, the California Department of Education, which does audits on school nutrition programs on a consistent basis, had this to say about our district’s program in their 2016 report: “Vista operates a program that the CA Dept. of Education uses as a leader and example to other programs throughout California and the nation.”

From the partnership with Vista’s Solutions Farms that brings organic greens to every school, to a leading Farm To School initiative, to the California Thursdays campaign that supports CA grown and produced food, our WaveCrest Cafe team is constantly striving to deliver an outstanding experience. We offer more choices each day than most districts, and we work to engage students in discussions of nutrition and wellness that encourage them to make the best choices for themselves.

We encourage you to visit our Nutrition Services website,, to learn more about our program. The site has menus, nutrition information, and a collection of fantastic videos that dive into just how Vista has created a nationally recognized nutrition program for our students, not to mention a few that are laugh out loud funny.

Thank you for your time with this message. Our Nutrition Services team is wonderful and ready to answer questions, listen to ideas, and share about the great work that they’re doing. We can all be assured that our children have great options at school to help keep them well fed and prepared for learning.
